The Quiet Man for Free is a cinematic game with more cutscenes than gameplay. That isn’t necessarily a death blow, given how many narrative-focused games exist and do well for themselves. Unfortunately, unexpected design decisions mean that this rather interesting quest will never have a chance. Perhaps the weirdest decision of all is the game’s usage of a supposedly deaf protagonist.
Combat is the fundamental and most basic style of gaming. You can button-mash your way through much of it and employ slo-mo finishers to conduct spectacular assaults reminiscent of action movies, but that’s the bare minimum. The boss fights itself are rarely distinguishable and may be completed using the same strategies as normal foes, which strangely all look the same.
The Quiet Man is a silent killer of unsuspecting players’ wallets and time. Aside from the competently produced live action clips and initially intriguing premise, there’s little of value here. The tale gets increasingly complicated and overdramatic as it goes along, and the decision not to add any sound on top of this is a nail in the coffin.
